Welcome to the Blog on Clara and Wilson McGarvey!

Clara's amniotic sac ruptured on June 7, 2011 when we were 24 weeks and 5 days pregnant. Ten days later, Clara and Wilson were born. They have already enriched our lives in ways we couldn't have imagined, and we wanted to share those experiences with our friends and family. So sit back and enjoy the read - they are full of excitment and surprises!

Born to Run

You may be wondering why you haven’t heard from us lately. The short answer is by the time we get both babies to sleep, have dinner, and clean bottles it is time for bed. We wonder what we did before kids when we thought we were “so” busy. Overall Clara and Wilson are doing really well. Big news, Clara now outweighs Wilson! Clara weighs 14 pounds and ½ ounce. Wilson weighs 13 pounds and 13 ounces. We are just a few weeks away before we are released from house arrest. We go to the pediatrician on Friday for their 9 month check up, yep, more shots.

So, what’s new? Well, we are running a five star restaurant, serving up meals every two hours! Stop on in for some pureed veggies or fruits, butternut squash is the daily special. Clara and Wilson are eating solids three times a day plus two ounces of milk after the meal and three big bottles in between the meals. We tried dropping the 11 pm feeding (we were waking them up to eat) but they were not eating enough throughout the day and waking up at random times for a feeding. We are back at it, feeding at 11 pm.

In addition to needing the 11pm feeding, both babies are teething. Wilson lays on his back and screams, no tears, just screams at inanimate objects. Clara randomly lets out shrills and starts crying and it is a cry like no other.  Based on her outburst, there have been several times we were convinced we broke her arm or foot. As of today, both arms and feet are intact, not so much our sanity. Chris could not take it anymore so she took off for Miami (okay, she had a conference for work) and left Morgan to keep the home fires burning. Let’s just hope there is no home fire while she is gone. There were tears of sadness leaving the house and tears of joy boarding the plane, the thought of eight solid hours of sleep is a dream come true – Adult Spring Break 2012!!!!!!!!! It is so sad that the thought of spring break on a beach is eight hours of sleep and the thought of going to a club or drinking too much is absolutely repulsive. I completely get the onesies that say “My parents use to be cool.”
Team McGarvey is ready for Spring! Finally both babies are willing and enjoy being in the jogging stroller. It has been a great way for all of us to be outside in this nice weather. Let me tell you, pushing the stroller on a run is an intense workout! While we are out running, so is Morgan. Morgan is working hard on his campaign knocking on doors and talking to voters. Lucky for all of us the primary election is in May and there is no republican running, therefore, if Morgan wins he will not have a general election in November.

First jog together!

Walking in the Highland's St. Patrick's Day parade. Clara and Wilson had to stay home.

Celebrating Eight Months!

I just returned home from the Louisville Mothers of Twins Club which meets once a month. That should have been my first clue that having twins was "different"; there isn't a "club" for parents of singletons. But it is a great resource and I made a friend who also has boy/girl preemie twins.

Speaking of preemies, we had our neonatal follow up appointment last Thursday and the doctor, Dr. Bibb, was very pleased with Clara's and Wilson's weight gain and development. She looked at us and said "you are doing a fantastic job". That was so great to hear from an expert who truly sees it all. Clara gained 6 pounds and 7 ounces since our last appointment (October 6) and Wilson gained 6 pounds.  After the appointment with the neonatal we were re-evaluated for First Steps. First Steps is a federally funded program that provides early intervention for children with developmental delays. Fortunately, we did not qualify. However, there are exercises we have to work on with Clara and Wilson. If they do not improve in holding weight in their arms while on tummy time, we will qualify for First Steps and a physical therapist will come to our house once a week. Unfortunately, the baby casino (exersaucer - the thing where they sit in a seat, feet hanging down and play with toys attached to this circular device) is closed for business. Any standing toys are off limits for them because preemies have different muscle tone than full term babies. Typically their muscles are too tight or too loose. Of course, we have one of each. Wilson's muscles are too tight and Clara's are too loose. I will point out what I mean in the pictures below. While we got a great report from the doctor, it was a tough reminder we still have challenges to overcome.

October 6, 2011 (1 month follow up)

February 16, 2012 (4 month follow up)

Wilson - 7 pounds

Wilson - 13 pounds

Clara - 12 pounds 10 ounces

Wilson's right arm is out in front, he needs to have it close to his chest bearing weight on it.
Clara is eating the blanket, she needs to keep her head up and put more weight in her lower back.

Yay! We are 8 months old and these stupid hats kinda fit!

I Would Walk 500 Miles

Big news! Our mellow fellow has not been so mellow lately. Today we found the culprit; Wilson's first tooth! We thought he was teething because of the excessive crying, drooling, and gnawing on anything within reach. On Monday afternoon, we saw his first little tooth popping through the gum line. We are very scared for Clara to start teething, let's just say she can be a bit, um, dramatic.

More big news! Both Clara and Wilson are now taking predictable naps...WE LOVE MISS MICHELLE!!!!!!! She finally cracked the code and has both kids napping!  Foolishly, we believed it would work if we put Clara down for a nap just like Miss Michelle. Below is the play-by-play of the afternoon nap last Saturday.
Clara pulls the blanket over her face when
Chris picks her up because she is crying.

After 1 hour and 15 minutes of fighting her nap,
Clara surrenders. Her sock was a casualty of war.

Getting Clara to sleep at night is equally challenging. She has not mastered the art of self soothing and is very particular about how she likes to be  calmed down. She does not like to be rocked or swayed, oh no, she wants to be walked. That's right, walked. We walk and walk and walk. We walk in circles around the the upstairs of our house like hamsters in a wheel. However, I would walk 500 miles just to get Clara to sleep.

And speaking of walking 500 miles, MORE BIG NEWS! Morgan is running for the State Senate in the 19th District of Kentucky. Morgan will go from walking Clara to walking precincts. When we said we wanted 2012 to be less eventful than 2011, we didn't mean it. That's just not our style; never a dull moment in our house. Fortunately, there is not a Republican candidate so Morgan's campaign will only last until the Primary Election on May 22.

With me back at work, Morgan busy with work and campaigning, and two babies on house arrest until flu and cold season ends, finding time to catch up with each other is challenging. We found a solution that works for everyone! On Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m. we load everyone in the car and drive around Louisville. The babies nap, I get Starbucks, Morgan gets a hot breakfast, and we have time to catch up. So if you see a blue Buick that looks like a state trooper's car following you closely on Shelbyville Road, don't be alarmed, it's just the McGarvey's out on a date.

This Thursday we have a follow up with the neonatal group. It is an important appointment because they are evaluating Clara's and Wilson's development. Fingers crossed all goes well. We will be sure to update the blog after our appointment. And Friday is their eight month birthday! We never posted the seven month birthday pictures so we'll post both seven and eight month pictures next weekend. Until then, below are pictures from Clara and Wilson's first Valentine's Day.

Miss Michelle made these adorable Valentine's Day onesies.

And Clara and Wilson looked great for the pictures until Clara decided to hit Wilson in the face.

Fortunately Mac was there to help soothe (ok, Mimi got the process started)
and we were able to go to dinner alone on Valentine's Day!

Welcome Home, the Crazy Lady, and Whole Foods

WELCOME HOME!

The biggest news of the last two weeks was Uncle Dave returning from Afghanistan and meeting Clara and Wilson for the first time. Dave closely followed all the excitement from afar and we were thrilled for him to finally meet his niece and nephew. Of course, when the big introduction finally happened, we forgot about Dave being a single, childless 35 year old male. His initial excitement quickly morphed into fear that one or both of the kids would spit up on him. It was an endearing response and a perfect introduction to Uncle Dave. Throughout his week at home Dave was able to spend a lot of time with Clara and Wilson. His fear of babies quickly subsided and, once his guard was down, Wilson made sure to spit up on his shirt.

Uncle Dave joyfully (and cautiously) met Clara and Wilson

Clara was on her best behavior for Uncle Dave.
The effort was appreciated by everyone.

Almost six months in a combat zone and that is probably the most
disgusted Dave has been in quite some time.

Bull's-eye!

THE CRAZY LADY

About two weeks ago, Michelle, our nanny, called to let us know the power was out. Without electricity, she did not want to open the refrigerator to get out Clara and Wilson's bottles. That was the most immediate concern, but we also had to address the possibility that power would not be restored in time to save the milk stockpiled in the fridge and the deep freeze. Not wanting to relive the headache we experienced during a power outage this summer, Chris immediately lept into action.

When Chris got home, Michelle told her an LG&E truck had just driven by our house. Chris jumped back in the car and went on a mission to find the LG&E workers. Chris is a results driven woman and when she sets her mind to something . . . watch out. Unfortunately, these poor LG&E workers didn't see her until it was too late. They were working on the power in someone's yard and Chris pulled over, got out of her car and waited for them on the grass. The foreman politely approached and assured Chris they would be finished soon. I don't think he ever saw the attack coming. Bam! Chris was on him and wasn't letting go. She urgently explained about the twins, the milk, and everything else. The LG&E foreman kindly deferred and explained they would get to our house as soon as possible. He even offered to take Chris' cell phone number and call her when they got to our block. That was not good enough. Chris made him call her while they were standing in some stranger's yard. She proudly explained later this was to capture his cell phone number so she could check in on his progress. (And yes, she did call).

Not more than a few hours, and three cell phone conversations with Joel the LG&E foreman, later, our power was restored. Joel is probably on our Christmas card list, Chris is probably on a customer "watch list", and I'm glad I was in depositions. To make things worse better, Chris sent an email to the CEO of the largest utility company in Kentucky in an effort to reward Joel for his great customer service. We refer to this incident as "the Crazy Lady" story, but we should be diplomatic and call it "A Mother's Love."

Wilson is happy Mom saved his food supply

WHOLE FOODS
Last Saturday was another big day at the McGarvey house; Clara and Wilson started eating rice cereal! I thought rice cereal would be similar to Rice Crispies, but there is no snap, crackle, or pop to the slime we force fed our children. Rice cereal is a textured liquid that resembles incredibly runny Cream of Wheat. However, it is served with a spoon and is supposed to prepare Clara and Wilson to eat other foods. Basically, rice cereal is like a gateway drug - we hope they'll eat this and be willing to try other things.

Wilson immediately took to the rice cereal and has eaten some every day this week. Clara is a pickier eater and wants nothing to do with the bland liquid we're eagerly convincing her to try. No amount of airplane noises, funny faces, or kind words will convince her to enjoy the rice cereal experience. Hopefully she'll get better at eating so we can move them along to apple sauce. Yum!

A picture says a thousand words . . .

. . . or at least we hope so because we don't have time to write a meaningful blog entry right now! The short version of what's happening is simple; everyone is alive (including us) and gaining weight (including us). And if a picture says a thousand words, these seven pics constitute our longest blog entry to date. Enjoy!

Wilson no longer acts like the bathtub is filled with battery acid,
which makes bath time much more fun!

She is incredibly cute . . . when she isn't crying.

Our two peas in their pod

Wilson looked dashing in his tux for the Golden Globes.
For those of you who are curious, Wilson wore an original Nick Hart
custom made jacket for the affair.

Wilson, Nick Hart, and some scraggly Justin Bieber look-alike
celebrated the arrival of the Hollywood awards season.

Reading or going to the bathroom?

At the end of the day, Clara and Wilson have us all on house arrest,
but we're trying to make the most of it.

We Wish You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year (Part 2)

Last New Year's Eve we enjoyed going out with friends and hoped we would soon become pregnant with our first child. This New Year's Eve we stayed at home and tried to balance our champagne flutes while feeding Clara and Wilson. The result was more awkward than Dick Clark's countdown. Wow, what a difference a year makes! We were really glad a few of our friends came over to keep us awake ring in the new year but, when the ball dropped, we were also happy to close the book on 2011.

If you've kept up with us through the blog this year, thank you. It means more than you'll ever know. It also means you know about all the ups and downs we experienced with Clara and Wilson, so we'll refrain from even attempting a recap. Instead, we'll use this opportunity to look ahead to 2012.

New Year's Resolutions
  1. Get More Sleep - we're hoping this is a New Year's Resolution the entire McGarvey family (cough, Clara and Wilson, cough cough) will adopt.
  2. Take Time for Each Other - whether once a week or once a month, take at least one night to go out for dinner, movie, concert, etc. without the kids.
  3. Empty the Diaper Genie Sooner - yeah, that needs to happen.
  4. Quit Talking to Each Other Through the Babies - for example, "Clara, I bet your daddy would love to get up and get your bottles ready" or "Wilson, is it Mommy's turn to change your diaper?" We are both guilty of doing this. However, when we catch ourselves doing it we intentionally make our comments funny and that usually results in delirious midnight laughter. (Typing this made me realize we must implement New Year's Resolution #2 and get out of the house a little more).
  5. Take Down the Christmas Decorations - it would really be great if we could do this before the end of January, but don't judge us too harshly if you drive by our house in February or March and see candles in the windows.
  6. Keep the Kids Healthy - it is important to remember how fragile Clara and Wilson are, especially during the height of cold and flu season.
  7. Keep Laughing - turns out that's important.
We've been writing this post in little pieces for most of the last 10 days, but our time at night is more limited. We have pictures of the kids we've been meaning to post for Chris' family in Arkansas, a birthday pic of Clara and Wilson for Uncle Dave's birthday, and some funny stories we want to share. Hopefully we'll get to some of those eventually. However, our biggest news of the New Year might explain the delay. On January 3rd, Chris went back to work. The transition has been smoother than we expected, and Chris is handling the situation with perfect aplomb, but our nights are little busier. Chris going back to work has also directly coincided directly with Clara's and/or Wilson 's decision to stop sleeping during the night. It hasn't been good for our sleep habits or our blogging. Hopefully we'll get more time to do both.

Thanks again for sticking with us through what was a pretty tough year. We're excited about 2012 and wish you all a Happy New Year!

The kids are growing every day. Their development led directly to the first
"Wilson, stop eating your sister's head" quote.
Hey, at least they're noticing each other.

We Wish You A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year (Part One)

(Part One is a recap of Christmas, Part Two will detail New Year's and our hopes for 2012)

Other than the day(s) we brought them home from the hospital, Christmas was our happiest day with Clara and Wilson. And to paraphrase the Grinch, no one quite knows the reason. It could be the gifts, the trees, and the lights. It could be Clara and Wilson slept through the night. But we think that the most likely reason of all could have been that our kids are so big, we're not worried about them being so small.

Christmas is the occasion we've thought about constantly since finding out we were pregnant. Initially we thought we would have one three month old child - and the first grandchild - at Christmas. Those expectations were quickly ratcheted up when we learned we would be holding two three month old children around the Christmas tree. All along we thought having three month olds would be great because the kids would be sleeping better, engaging more with the world around them, and Chris would still be on maternity leave through the holidays. It seemed like the perfect plan.

As has been well-chronicled in this blog, that is not how things happened. When Chris' water broke unexpectedly on June 7th, Christmas was the last thing on our minds. For several months, Clara and Wilson fought to stay alive at Kosair Children's Hospital while we, for the most part, helplessly watched. We did what we could. Chris pumped every two hours to get the best possible nutrition into Clara's and Wilson's feeding tubes. We practically lived at Kosair and constantly quizzed the doctors and nurses on the treatments and prognoses for our children.

Throughout their stay in NICU, we also searched for ways to cope with our new reality. We relied heavily on our friends, family, church, and even the grief counselors at Kosair to get through the roughest stretches. But we also constructed some self-defense barriers to guard against the worst. We didn't know - and the doctors couldn't tell us - how Clara and Wilson would progress.

For whatever reason, the last remnants of our emotionally protective walls were torn down Christmas day. The worries, fears, and emotional (not to mention physical) exhaustion evaporated as we finally felt like we made it. It was Christmas Day and there we were with two beautiful, babbling, smiling babies. Instead of jumping for joy, we turned into blubbering idiots. No really, if you spent the day with us you would have seen more tears in the span of a few hours than you would during an entire season of Oprah. We started crying in the car on the way to Morgans' parents' house, cried when watching Clara and Wilson open presents, cried during the blessing before Christmas dinner, and cried before going to bed. Chris has gone from being "steel" to being "Steel Magnolias." They were all tears of joy, but we still looked ridiculous.

At least we weren't the only ones who looked ridiculous. Chris bought, made, and received Christmas outfits for Clara and Wilson. Rather than pick her favorite, Chris decided to dress the kids in most of them. Between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Clara and Wilson went through more wardrobe changes than Lady GaGa. Below is a sampling of what their first Christmas looked like:

It was fairly early on Christmas Eve, but our little Santa Wilson was already getting tired.

Uncle Gabe and Aunt Mary Helen give Clara and Wilson presents Christmas morning.
(Yes, Wilson went from a Santa suit to those Christmas pajamas. He will hate these pictures)

Aunt Mary Helen lets Clara model her new stylish sweater dress!

Uncle Zac and Aunt Sara hold the kids while Wilson shows off his rockin' Christmas socks.

It was awesome to have kids this year at Christmas. Watching them, our hearts grew three sizes that day.

Big Mac held the phone on speaker while we all talked to Captain Uncle Dave in Afghanistan.

The third outfit of the day and Wilson was still smiling.

The next morning, everyone was exhausted.
The Christmas we imagined a year ago happened. And as the Grinch would say, it came without packages, boxes, or bags. Because for this wonderful first Christmas, we had our family healthy and together at home. Clara and Wilson still have a long row to hoe, but we believe these Christmas miracles will be waddling around knocking ornaments off the tree this time next year. And for us, truly, Christmas Day will always be just as long as we have we. Welcome Christmas while we stand, heart to heart, and hand in hand.

(Part Two will be appearing soon, including a special Happy Birthday wish to Uncle Dave  . . . even though his birthday is today)
